The world’s top 5 gambling destinations
Whether you’re a seasoned poker player, love the thrill of the roulette table, or just love some low-stakes fun on the slot machines, Macau is simply a must-visit place for anybody interested in gambling and casinos.
This autonomous region of China, once colonized by the Dutch and not far away from Hong Kong, is known as the ‘Vegas of the East’ thanks to its ample supply of mega-casinos. Most have hotels, theatres and other entertainment facilities attached.
Gambling has been legal in Macau for over 100 years; however, only since 2002 when the government stopped enforcing their monopoly policy regarding casinos did most of the large brand named casinos started to pop up. Over the last 15 years, Macau has welcomed some of the largest and grandest casinos in not only Asia but the entire world. These include the Venetian Casino Resort, The City of Dreams, MGM, The Sands Macau and Wynn Macau.
2. Las Vegas
Sitting in the middle of America’s vast Nevada desert, Las Vegas needs little introduction as a worldwide gambling destination. Boasting more casinos than any other city on Earth, the City of Sin is where you can come to play any casino game, at any time of day, for pretty much any amount of money.
Virtually all of the most recognized casino names in Vegas can be found dotted along its ‘strip’, including the likes of MGM Grand, the Bellagio, the Venetian, Encore and Wynn.
The first ever Las Vegas casino popped up in Vegas some 85 years ago in the 1930s, but it wasn’t until 1941 when the first gambling venue opened up on what is now known as the Las Vegas Strip. Named the ‘El Rancho Vegas’ this casino-hotel complex had a modest 60 rooms and was eventually destroyed by a fire in 1960. Other noteworthy casinos that you can visit today in Vegas are Caesars Palace (first built in 1966), MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (first opened in 1973) and The Mirage (1989). Of course, all of these names have undergone extensive renovations, re-builds and extensions over the years, and most now incorporate multiple restaurants, bars, hotel rooms and even nightclubs.
Singapore may not be the first name you think of when it comes to gambling. In fact, the ‘Lion City’ has a bit of a bad (and often over-exaggerated) reputation when it comes to its laws and restrictions. However, the city-state does currently boast two ultra-modern and very large casinos, namely Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands Casino. These two casinos opened in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
As gambling is illegal in many nearby Southeast Asian countries, these casinos prove very popular with Malaysians, Indonesians, Thais, as well as Chinese tourists and locals. Both offer a good range of games, including poker, blackjack, roulette, slots, and baccarat. Elsewhere, Singapore does also have smaller arcade games rooms where the focus is more towards video slots, while horseracing is another popular form of gambling.
For gambling on Australia’s famed Gold Coast, there’s no better place than Sydney. The choice of places focuses more on quality than quantity; 11 venues in total might not seem a lot, but for a city this size, it’s actually relatively few. Plus, some of these aren’t actually casinos, but rather gaming rooms or horseracing tracks where betting is permitted.
The largest and most popular of them all is the Star Casino which fits over 1,500 machines and 140 tables across its 100,000 square feet of floor space. First established in 1995, Star Casino has undergone several renovations and has since added an additional floor. The Crown Sydney is another name to look out for in Sydney.
Monaco, also known as ‘Monte Carlo’, has a history of gambling and casinos dating back hundreds of years; in fact, many consider this to be the birthplace of the modern-day casino, as well as popular games like roulette.
Casino de Monte-Carlo, the most well-known casino in the city, was first opened in 1893 and is still standing today – attracting as many tourists as it does serious gamblers. Many other casinos here can be found in buildings dating back as far as the 18th century, as well as a few new-build games rooms dotted around the famous coastline and inside many of the five-star hotels.
If you’re visiting, other casinos worth checking out are the Monte Carlo Bay Casino, Sun Casino, Casino Café de Paris and Salle des Palmiers.
Inspired to try your luck in a casino but don’t want to get on an airplane? Then you can still play a huge selection of casino games at various mobile casino sites. A number of popular mobile casino games that are available in these casinos can be played from your mobile device.
Most commonly played via apps, you can simply download a secure and trusted mobile casino via the App Store or Google Play (depending on whether you’re using Apple or Android) and then play virtual poker, blackjack, slots, roulette and many more exciting games. However, nothing really beats the views and atmosphere of the real thing.
